This trade happend at the end of the 2011 season.A blockbuster trade happens and Chris Paul now his is on the Lakers of Kobe Bryant. The Lakers wanted him because they lost 4-0 to the Mavs. And the New Orleans Horents wanted to get rid of chris paul as he said that he wanted to play in L.A.So they were looking to trade him but Chris paul did not leave many options as he said he wanted to play in New York or L.A.The Hornets front office was working on a trade for days and when was all set it done it was a 3 team deal. That trade said that the Hornets would got Lamar Odom,Goran Dragic,Kevin Martin and the New York's 1st round pick. The Lakers would got CP3 and the Rockets Pau Gasol.Everybody was happy ecxept from the NBA.About 45 Minutes later David Stren and the NBA vetoed the trade. It was not clear why they did it but Los Angeles fans were pissed and players were like"Wow the nba now will say were they players will go.."You got Odom saying that he wont be on the Lakers camp and it left pau gasol felling kind of funny chris paul was pissed.
So the NBA one year ago got ownership of the Hornets. The Hornets where about to get sold and the NBA wanted to make sure that the team wont move from New Orleans.Meaning that yes David Stren was the owner of the Hornets.
So why it didint happend?A theory says that the NBA did not want the value of the Hornets to drop so by keeping cp3 they could sell they team and get the maximum of the money they could get but that is does not any any sense because cp3 would leave the team anyways...
So here is where Dan Gilbert Gets involved.Dan sent a e-mail to Stern he really influence the decision here's the E-mail:
Commissioner,
It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.
This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.
Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.
I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn't appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).
I just don't see how we can allow this trade to happen.
I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?
Please advise...
Dan G.
