Klay Thompson was thanking J.R. Smith after NBA Finals Game 1 blunder

The story on Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith’s inexplicable meltdown in Game 1 of last season’s Finals just refuses to go away. Two months on and a new anecdote related to the infamous incident has emerged. This time around it allegedly involves a very appreciative Klay Thompson.

As discussed by Nico Martinez of Fadeaway World, it was actually Thompson’s teammate, two-time MVP winner Stephen Curry, who was somehow involved in the recent revelation.

In an interview on the Bill Simmons Podcast, Curry discussed a number of subjects with the host, from the NBA’s Twitter presence to his most memorable Draymond Green story.

The subject of the J.R. Smith blunder was also discussed in the interview.

The Warriors players played down the incident in the post-game press conference, but according to Simmons, the Dubs were just being professional at that point. The podcast host claimed that there was actually video footage of the team celebrating their victory in their locker room in which they were visibly and audibly grateful to Smith for his howler.

According to Simmons, in the footage in question, which for some reason was not shown on the broadcast, there is even a moment when Thompson himself utters the words, “Thank you, J.R.!”

Unless this piece of video evidence surfaces, then we would have no way to tell if these events actually transpired. Nevertheless, it would be very hard for the Warriors to deny that they were feeling at least some appreciation towards Smith for his costly error.
